The Delights of Brockley Market – Street Food Style
London has its fair share of markets, whether it’s a farmers market in Islington or the famous Borough Market near London Bridge… Londoner’s really are spoilt for choice. One of the city’s newest markets is Brockley Market in Lewisham, and it’s quickly gaining a reputation as a destination for great food. As a venue for street food it’s definitely one of my personal favourites, with choices ranging from burgers and scotch eggs, to burritos and wraps. All, of course, in addition to wonderful fresh produce.
The market is a five-minute train from London Bridge and well worth the journey. If you do make the trip down to Lewisham, here are some of my favourites that you might want to try.
Mother Flipper

Double Candy Bacon Burger from Mother Flipper
Mother Flipper’s burgers were the reason I first visited Brockley Market, and they’re one of the main reasons I keep going back. Choose from three burgers: the Mother Flipper Cheese Burger, the Chilli Flipper or, my burger of choice, the Double Candy Bacon Flipper. The bacon flipper is made up of two beef patties (using 28 day aged chuck steak) and candied streaky bacon, topped with American cheese and served with lettuce, ketchup and mustard in a demi-brioche bun - it’s a little bit of meaty heaven. Be warned, this is a fantastically juicy burger and you are likely to end up with the juices running down your arm!
Egg Boss

Perfectly cooked scotch egg from Egg Boss
On the other side of the market is Egg Boss. Now scotch eggs have a pretty bad reputation, ruined as they’ve been by supermarkets and service stations up and down the country. But in the last few years they’ve enjoyed a bit of a revival and I think a proper scotch egg is a thing of beauty. This is exactly what the Egg Boss is serving up. His fantastic range of scotch eggs include Cumberland Sausage, Black Pudding, Lamb Merguez and his very special Rib Man egg. This king of scotch eggs uses the Rib Man’s own Holy F**k hot sauce and is cooked to perfection, complete with runny yolk, seasoned with smoked sea salt and served with his home made brown sauce.
Red Herring Smokehouse
Big Smoke Club Sandwich from Red Herring Smokehouse
If a bacon sandwich is more your kind of thing, head over to The Red Herring Smokehouse, for some incredible home-smoked bacon. If it’s on the menu, my suggestion would be to get yourself a ‘Big Smoke Club Sandwich’ - you won’t regret it! Smoked chicken and bacon, lettuce, tomato, and a generous spread of wild garlic mayo, all served between two slices of toasted brown bread. The smokiness of the meat stands out in the sandwich and complements the amazing garlic mayo perfectly!

Mackerel Wrap from Mike and Ollie
These are my top street food picks, however there is so much more to discover at Brockley Market… If Mexican food is more your thing then you can check out Luardo’s burritos, tortas and tacos. Alternatively, Mike and Ollie offer inventive wraps with locally foraged ingredients. Alternatively, if you’ve got a sweet tooth head to London Particular’s for sourdough doughnuts or Sugargrain for gluten-free goodies. Whatever you like to eat, you’ll find something satisfying at Brockley Market. Happy eating!
